On May 22, 2025, I had the honour of attending the official swearing-in ceremony of Member of Parliament Ziad Aboultaif for the 45th Parliament of Canada. The event, held in Room 225-A of the West Block on Parliament Hill, was not only a formal reaffirmation of Mr. Aboultaif’s parliamentary duties but also a powerful reminder of the strength of Canada’s democratic institutions and the communities they represent.
Arriving at the historic halls of Parliament, I was greeted by a sense of formality, purpose, and genuine solidarity. The ceremony itself was elegant yet humble, reflecting Mr. Aboultaif’s grounded leadership style and deep connection to the people he serves. It was a meaningful event attended by dignitaries, community leaders, and representatives from across Canada and around the world—each bringing with them the shared values of service, responsibility, and unity.
What made this experience especially memorable was not only the grandeur of the occasion but the warmth of the people present. Mr. Aboultaif and his family extended sincere hospitality to every guest. Their kindness and attentiveness reminded us all that politics, at its best, is rooted in personal connection and respect.
Later that evening, the celebration continued with a dinner reception at KS on the Keys in Ottawa, where conversation and fellowship thrived. I was fortunate to engage with individuals leading various institutions and initiatives across Canada—from public policy and nonprofit leadership to international outreach. These interactions opened doors for future collaborations that can further the goals of inclusivity, advocacy, and community development.
As a Kurdish woman, attending such a moment at the heart of Canada’s federal democracy held deep meaning. It reaffirmed the importance of diverse voices being seen, heard, and respected. Mr. Aboultaif, who himself comes from a proud immigrant background, stands as a testament to what is possible when multiculturalism is not only welcomed but empowered.
It was also a great honour to attend on behalf of the Kurdistani Diaspora Confederation of Canada and the Kurdistan Diaspora Women Federation of Canada. To stand among national leaders and represent both the Kurdish community and the women of our diaspora was deeply meaningful. It was a proud and humbling experience to carry the voice of our people into one of the most powerful parliaments in the world.
This swearing-in ceremony was not just a procedural event—it was a celebration of civic duty, a reaffirmation of democratic ideals, and a beautiful gathering of hearts committed to building a stronger Canada. I left inspired, connected, and hopeful for what lies ahead.
