Threads of Identity: Celebrating Kurdish Heritage in Zakho

Govara Pêngav

The city of Zakho in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq recently hosted the third annual “Shal u Shepik” Festival, a vibrant celebration of traditional Kurdish men’s attire and cultural heritage. Held from April 29 to 30, 2025, the event aimed to preserve and showcase the iconic “Shal u Shepik” costume, a symbol of Kurdish identity traditionally handcrafted from goat hair.

The festival featured live exhibitions of traditional Kurdish clothing, cultural seminars, and performances by over 30 folkloric art troupes from across Kurdistan, including delegations from Bakur, Rojhalat, and Rojava. Evening programs included musical performances by renowned Kurdish artists, enhancing the festival’s cultural richness.

The event was officially inaugurated by the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Minister of Interior and concluded with a musical evening featuring prominent Kurdish artists. The festival not only celebrated Kurdish fashion but also served as a cultural bridge, connecting Kurdish communities across borders and generations.
